We keep on keeping on!

The Caribbean Chinese Association through its CCA Cares initiative selected the Markham Food Bank as a recipient for one of its charitable donations. The Markham Food Bank has a continuous need, big or small, year round.  As we approach the Holiday season, we encourage our community to consider donating to the Markham Food Bank and helping those who can use the assistance, particularly during this time.

CCA 2019 Bursary Award Winner, Russell Yap Young

The CCA’s Student Bursary was presented at our annual picnic to Russell Yap Young. He recently graduated as an Ontario Scholar from Pierre Elliot Trudeau H.S. During high school he was a member of the arts council and volunteered with the Adopt-A-Stream program. Russell was one of the few teenagers who participated two years ago with the CCA to build Riverside Basic School in Jamaica; he recalls it as “the opportunity of a lifetime”. He hopes to combine his interest in the arts and the environment by creating a sustainable fashion brand that has a low impact on the planet, as well as providing clothing to the needy. Russell was accepted in the Fashion Design program at Toronto Film School. His parents are Ron Yap Young and Lisa Wilson. His grandparents, deceased, were Thomas and Ruby Wilson and Sydney Yap Young. His other grandmother, still living, is Lola Yap Young.

The CCA bursary of $1,000.00 is given annually to the child of a member in good standing who is entering his or her first year at a full time registered Canadian post-secondary institution in a minimum two-year diploma or degree course. All applicants are reviewed anonymously by our bursary selection committee.
